Game Overview

Now I'd like to provide a basic overview of our game!

Our game is partly inspired by experiences I've had playing Mario Kart 64 as a kid. The game really exemplified the kart-racing genre and party-friendly atmosphere for my generation. It also deftly handled the balance between skill and luck to provide a fun experience for all ages and skill levels.

Mario Kart 64 had a really fun atmosphere and sense of style. I hope to convey this same feeling with a slightly darker feel for our game.

Hell Racers is a Mario Kart inspired racing game with a twist -- the goal of the game is not to win, but to lose.

The story behind this is that demons are driving deceased characters to hell. These characters are passengers and are very reluctant to reach their destination; so they must use any means possible to either slow their karts down or speed others up. However, since they are but passengers, they do not have direct control of the handling of their karts. The Devil, in his twisted sense of humor, has promised to spare the passenger who reaches the fiery pit of hell last from the fiery fate that awaits him or her. So he placed various obstacles and power-ups all over the track to give the passengers something to work with. He also allowed them some limited control of side-to-side movement for their karts. The passengers for each demon-driven kart must take advantage of these powers, obstacles and power-ups if they hope to come in last.

A more in depth overview for our initial game concept, including specifics on gameplay and mechanics can be found here.
